Michael leads the pathology component of FR’s Tree Health Advisory and Monitoring service as well as supporting various research projects. Michael’s team of diagnosticians answer enquires that come from members of the public through TreeAlert, while screening them for pathogens, of which some may be new to GB. The team processes samples from interceptions at GB ports and other quarantine samples, identifying any regulated high-risk pathogens such as: Fusarium circinatum, Ceratocystis palatini and Xylella fastidiosa, which help to maintain the UK’s pathogen free status.
The team also processes and investigates routine regulated pathogen surveillance samples for several pathogens of forestry concern, including various Phytopthora species. Michael, alongside his team, provides expert advice to the public and stakeholders (for example, DEFRA and the Forestry Commission) about forest pathogen identity and virulence status. Some of Michael’s responsibilities include:
Prior to taking on the role as Diagnostic and Advisory-Pathology lead in February 2023, Michael led the regulated quarantine pathogen processing component of the THDAS group and started this role at the onset of the P. pluvialis outbreak in 2021. Michael also spent 2 years working within the acute oak decline team investigating the role of the buprestid beetle, Agrillus bigutatis, played in vectoring the causal bacterial agents.
Michael has a PhD in Molecular Cell Biology from the University of Cape Town in South Africa and spent 21 years working at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). During this time Michael spent the first 6 years developing genetic markers for both crop and tree breeding programmes. Michael subsequently took on a role with a biotechnology focus using genetic manipulation of bacteria for the creation of a novel bacterial recombinant protein production platform (2 patents). He then was promoted to group lead of early-stage recombinant protein production of veterinary, human health and industrial relevant products. He led several industry relevant technology demonstrators for veterinary vaccines. Michael has also spent 18 months working for a contract development and manufacturing organisation (CDMO) in the UK as a Technical Project Lead.
