This Leaflet provides practical advice to forest managers on all the important aspects of upland restocking practice. Each section is based on the best available information, and the treatment of each topic is deliberately brief and concentrates on the important points to be taken into consideration. Other sources of information are indicated in the text, and where appropriate, general guidance is given on the relative costs of treatment options. Topics covered include: interaction of harvesting and restocking; forest design considerations; site preparation; species choice; planting stock specification and handling; planting position, pattern and method; beating up requirements; natural regeneration; fertiliser treatment; weed control measures; protection against pine weevil and black pine beetles; pathological considerations; wildlife damage and control measures.
