This report is a description and assessment of research into the use of the Forest of Dean by day visitors. The central theme of the study is the prediction of recreational use. Dr R.J. Colenutt and local Forestry Commission staff carried out a survey of day visitors to the Forest of Dean during the summer of 1968, and this work formed the basis of Dr Colenutt’s doctoral thesis submitted to the University of Bristol in 1970. This work is a valuable contribution to the study of demand prediction and should assist others contemplating similar investigations. The second part of the report considers the planning implications of the study.
