Knowledge sharing, problem-solving and professional development in a Scottish Ecosystem Services Community of Practice

This paper describes the benefits and challenges associated with developing and maintaining ESCom Scotland, a community of researchers, policymakers, practitioners and others involved in natural resource management in Scotland. Based on our experience, we provide ten recommendations to help others implement similar communities of practice.

Forestry & Woodland Resilience to Drought (FORWaRD)

To inform ‘climate resilient forestry’ policy and management, understanding the drought response of UK tree species is crucial but remains largely unquantified. The Forestry & Woodland Resilience to Drought (FORWaRD) project will address these knowledge gaps by providing an integrated assessment of drought resilience for a variety of UK tree species across a range of temporal and spatial scales.

    Provenance variation of emerging species

Forest Research has recently examined some long-term experiments to examine provenance variation of emerging species.  Individual reports for the species covered so far can be found here. The table at the bottom of this page is a summary of how the results compare with Forestry Commission Bulletin 66, which only...

No seed zone effects on the survival, growth, and stem form of Pacific silver fir in Britain

    Lead Author: Gary Kerr
Long-term research finds Pacific silver fir has great potential as a forestry species in Britain With our climate changing and an increasing range of pests and diseases affecting trees in Britain, it is important forest managers diversify the tree species they plant and use a wider range of forest management systems (e.g. continuous cover forestry). Pacific silver […]

Upgrading Seed Lots of European Silver Fir (Abies alba Mill.) using Imbibition-Drying-Separation

    Lead Author: S. McCartan
How effective is imbibition-drying- separation? European silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) produces good seed crops every three to five years, but these crops often have a high proportion of empty seeds. In many tree species, the empty and insect-infested seeds are removed during processing and cleaning of seed lots. However, this is only possible if filled […]

    Valuation of Welsh Forest Resources

This study estimates using a natural capital accounting approach the value of five ecosystem goods and services provided by woodlands in Wales: standing timber, timber extraction, carbon sequestration, recreation and air quality improvement.
