The genetic consequences of long term habitat fragmentation on a self-incompatible clonal plant, Linnaea borealis L.

    Lead Author: Joan Cottrell
Study finds twinflower in Scotland exhibits genetic effects of chronic population fragmentation Habitat fragmentation is widely thought to contribute to the decline of plant species. In part, this is due to the restriction it places on the flow of genes (which occurs through pollen and seed dispersal) within a plant population, creating sub-populations within which localised […]

OPM Manual – 8. Occupational health

Oak processionary moth (OPM) caterpillars, or larvae, are covered with thousands of minute, irritating hairs. These can be released as a defence mechanism, or blown off by the wind, and come into contact with people and animals. Contact can cause symptoms ranging from a mildly itching rash to allergic reactions. The caterpillars build communal nests on the trunks […]

Not present in United Kingdom Notifiable – See ‘Report a sighting’ below Scientific name of causal agent – Candidatus Phytoplasma ulmi (C. Phytoplasma ulmi) ‘Yellows’ is a plant disease caused by a group of organisms called phytoplasmas, which are specialised forms of bacteria. One of these phytoplasmas, Candidatus Phytoplasma ulmi, can infect elm trees (trees in the Ulmus […]

Canker stain of plane (Ceratocystis platani)

Not present in United Kingdom Notifiable – see ‘Report a sighting’ below Scientific name of causal agent – Ceratocystis platani Canker stain of plane is a disease which can affect several species of plane trees (trees in the Platanus genus). It is caused by the ascomycete fungus Ceratocystis platani (C. platani), which was formerly known as Ceratocystis platani f. […]

Pathway evaluation and pest risk management in transport (PERMIT)

Forests are particularly vulnerable to movements of Invasive Alien Species. Multiple pathways for transfer of pests internationally are poorly characterised, leading to increasing transfer and establishment of new damaging organisms. This EU COST Action FP1002 aims to address this shortfall in knowledge and practice, and focus on reducing threats from exotic pests through promoting enhanced pathway management.
