Kate is a forestry and climate change scientist developing applied research in climate change adaptation, mitigation, and woodland creation and ecosystem service provision. Kate is the Programme Manager for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero – Forest Research Memorandum of Understanding (DESNZ-FR MOU) delivering research on climate change mitigation to support Net Zero Policies.

Kate leads Forest Research’s modelling work to UKCEH for the Defra EVAST and Welsh Government ERAMMP Projects, bringing expertise in Forest Research’s Ecological Site Classification Model (ESC), forest management, and model integration with the CARBINE forest accounting model and forest economic assessments. Kate is an R-modeller and is supporting the development of ESC using UKCP18 CHESSCAPES data. Kate is a Work Area Co-lead for SIS Programme 1.

Expanding Agroforestry

The Expanding Agroforestry project aims to support the creation of agroforestry in the UK through providing research to support policy and practitioners through evidence reviews and the collection of underpinning empirical evidence.

Themes

Research

Land Use for Net Zero, Nature and People (LUNZ) Hub

The LUNZ Hub is an innovative transdisciplinary research initiative helping to drive transformational land use change in the UK needed to achieve net zero by 2050.

Expanding Agroforestry: A Tree Species Guide for Agroforestry in the UK

This ‘Tree Species Guide for UK Agroforestry Systems’ provides an overview of 33 species of trees and shrubs that could be planted in UK agroforestry systems.

Other Research

Environmental Value Assessment Scenario Tool (EVAST)

EVAST simulates the potential effects of policy on ecosystem service stocks, flows and values for Defra’s key priority areas of Biodiversity, Net Zero, Water Quality and Air Quality.

Forest Research Climate Change Hub

The Climate Change Hub brings together information and practical guidance about protecting our UK woodlands and forests from the impacts and risks due to the changing climate through adaptive practice.

ERAMMP National Forest in Wales Evidence Pack for Welsh Government

The National Forest Evidence Review was commissioned by Welsh Government from ERAMMP (UKCEH lead Environment and Rural Affairs Monitoring and Modelling Programme) and co-led by Forest Research to provide key evidence of potential benefits and disbenefits of woodland creation, woodland expansion and managing undermanaged woodland, to provide an evidence base to inform the development of a National Forest for Wales. The main report is supported by 8 Annex Reports.

Quantifying the sustainable forestry carbon cycle (QFORC)

Research to assess the influence of different factors on the potential for carbon sequestration that could be realized by creating different types of woodland.

Ecological Site Classification (ESC) – Forest Research

Ecological Site Classification (ESC) is a decision support system and model to support the selection of tree species that are ecologically suited to particular sites.

Expanding Agroforestry

The Expanding Agroforestry project aims to synthesise available evidence on agroforestry to address key policy questions, and to carry out research to collect the underpinning empirical evidence necessary to extend the evidence base.

ClimateXChange
