Terms and conditions

By using the Forest Research (FR) provided Guest Wi-Fi, you acknowledge and agree that there are significant security, privacy and confidentiality risks inherent in accessing or transmitting information through the internet.

Accordingly, you agree that the owner and/or provider of this network is NOT liable for any interception or transmissions, computer worms or viruses, loss of data, file corruption, hacking or damage to your computer or other devices that result from the transmission or download of information or materials through the internet service provided.

Use of the wireless network is subject to the general restrictions outlined below. If abnormal, illegal, or unauthorized behaviour is detected, FR reserves the right to permanently disconnect the offending device from the wireless network.

When using the FR provided Guest Wi-Fi to access the Internet, you must not:

  • use another individual’s identity/password to gain access to the Internet, even if they have given you this information and their permission;
  • access illegally or without authorization computers, accounts, equipment or networks belonging to another party, or attempt to penetrate/circumvent the security measures of any system
  • acquire, copy, install, store or use software obtained in breach of the appropriate vendor licence agreement, which is piracy;
  • engage in any activity that infringes or misappropriates the intellectual property rights of others, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, service marks, trade secrets, or any other proprietary right of any third party.
  • access BBC iPlayer for personal use without confirming that your use is covered by a valid TV Licence, as required by law;
  • break the law, participate in unlawful activities or encourage criminality;
  • create, access, download, solicit, display or store any offensive and/or illegal materials, images, videos or media clips, that could be reasonably regarded as:
    • harassment and/or discrimination on the basis of a ‘protected characteristic’; or
    • pornographic, sexually explicit, obscene, indecent, abusive or defamatory;
  • create, access, download, solicit, display or store any materials, images, videos or media clips, that could be reasonably regarded as:
    • conflicting with the interests of FR or bringing FR into disrepute; and/or
    • inconsistent with the Civil Service Code, FR’s Values and/or HR Policy and HR Procedure – Conduct and Security;
  • download or access on-line games or gambling;
  • participate in adult chat, personal dating or complicated financial transactions, for example, dealing in shares;
  • subscribe to any website or service that incurs unreasonable and/or unauthorised costs to Forest Research;
  • enter into or vary a legally binding contract on behalf of FR:
    • outwith FR policy; and/or
    • without the appropriate authority
  • send unsolicited bulk and/or commercial messages over the Internet using the service or use the service for activities that invade another’s privacy
  • distribution of Internet viruses, Trojan horses, or other destructive activities

To access the FR guest Wi-Fi you will be asked to enter your name and email address. This information will be stored securely and in-line with GDPR.
