A working knowledge of lichen ecology is important to most foresters. The study of lichens can reveal a good deal of important information about the age, health and management history of the woodlands where they are found – whether it is ‘ancient' woodland, for example, or the prevalence of atmospheric pollution in the area. This Handbook describes what lichens are, how they live, where they can be found and how they reproduce. It assesses the effects of various management practices on lichen abundance and species diversity, and it suggests methods by which they may be conserved. This Handbook is no longer available in hardcopy.
