This Leaflet looks at open ditch schemes superimposed on ploughing and commonly called cross-draining. Sections covered are – site factors, laying out a drainage scheme, limitations to the use of open drains, maintenance, and remedial drainage work. Appendix 1 discusses the allowable catchment area for cross-drains, appendix 2 contains a glossary.
