The need for a visit to China by British foresters was first proposed in January 1978 to the Chairman of the Great Britain – China Centre by the Earl Bathurst when President of the Royal Forestry Society of England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The visit subsequently followed, sponsored and arranged by the Centre, and coincided with the establishment of an independent Chinese Ministry of Forestry, and a new emphasis on the place of forestry in rural land management and on the amelioration of living conditions in urban areas. This paper contains reports be various members of the British delegation of different aspects of their trip to China.
