Heather (Calluna vulgaris), is known as an inhibitor of growth of several tree species, particularly Sitka and Norway spruces, silver fir, Douglas fir and western hemlock. Pines and larches are much less affected except Corsican pine. This Leaflet is primarily concerned with the control of heather in crops of Sitka spruce. Problems arising from heather in conifer plantations are discussed. Prescriptions are given for medium, low and ultra low volume applications of 2,4-D esters to kill heather in plantations using a knapsack sprayer, mistblower and ultra low volume equipment respectively.
